Hello there fellow wanderlusters! It's Day 6 of the 12 Days of Blogmas!
So, yeah. What do the holidays mean to me?
I talked about it lightly in my poem in Day 1, but the holidays, to me, are really about diversity. It's about acknowledging that the world is filled to the brim with different cultures, and that not everybody celebrates Christmas, or Kwanzaa, or Hanukkah, or any of those major holidays. It's about knowing that although there are some people who will have different beliefs, being accepting rather than tolerant is really important.
Just think about it - that is something that really needs to be emphasized. In the world, we have terrorist attacks based on religion, we stereotype cultures, we segregate communities, we literally inflict pain on people because of their race. And that's not OK. To me, that's the most disgusting aspect of our world, that there are people who suffer because of things about themselves they can't change.
How can we go on any longer like that? How can we condone the deaths of innocent people? It's wrong. And trust me, there is no religion or culture I've ever come across that really allows that. It's just people with clouded views of what is religiously correct, but we can't hold the wrongdoing against the religion itself - it's all the people.
I remember my teacher told our class a story that really shocked me. In the news, she read about a girl who had been raised by her parents believing that people of a certain race (which I won't name) were dangerous. That they were just involved in gangs and robberies and crime and that there was nothing more to that ethnicity than that. So when the girl went to the movies, and she was seated next to a person of that ethnicity, she ran away screaming at the top of her lungs.
The holidays are about unity and celebrating different backgrounds whether or not they're ours, and like I said, with all the racial violence going on, that's a really big flaw in our society. Hopefully both of us can works towards ending that. Let's support each other, love each other, befriend each other no matter what color we are.
